Oh the debate of soy!
The soy bean has been part of the human diet for thousands of years and the Ancient Chinese believed it to be one of the five sacred plants vital for life (alongside grains like rice, wheat, barley and millet). It's important to note that different sources of soy can have health implications. Largely due to the mass change in our food production, especially that of genetically modified agriculture specifically with soy, corn and wheat. This has detrimental effects on both human health, soil health and the overall health of the environment. But this mustn't be confused with soy that has been naturally and organically grown and farmed.
All our bodies are different and we all have unique requirements - I am a firm believer in listening to your body and eating what you feel will be most beneficial for your own health and well-being. It's important to research and understand where your food comes from. This is why I am very passionate about eating as naturally, organically and seasonally as possible. I only consume organic or non GMO soy and I really love the ethos and commitment to organic food standard practises that local plant based company, Tabu Foods have. The tofu in this recipe is theirs and I used the paneer as it's extra firm and great to work with.
DID YOU KNOW?
Organic soy is high in protein, fibre and a great source of antioxidants. It is also low in saturated fat and cholesterol free. It also contains essential amino acids such as magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, calcium and iron.
Let’s make it ☺
Ingredients for the tofu fries
350g extra firm tofu, cut into rectangular strips
½ cup almond flour
¼ cup plant milk + more if needed
3 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
1 tsp mixed dried herbs
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp smoked sweet paprika
¼ tsp ground cumin
Pinch of sea salt + ground black pepper
Ingredients for the creamy dipping sauce
½ cup vegan mayo
1 small garlic clove, minced
Juice from half a lemon
½ tsp liquid sweetener (agave syrup/maple syrup) - optional
Pinch of sea salt
Serving suggestion:
Wedge of lemon
Method
1. To make the tofu fries. Add the plant milk into a bowl. In a separate bowl add the almond flour, nutritional yeast, mixed dried herbs, garlic powder, smoked sweet paprika, ground cumin, sea salt and ground black pepper. Mix well.
2. Dip the tofu strip into the milk and then into the almond flour mixture. Once all the strips are dipped into both mixtures; lightly brush with olive oil and air fry at 200C for 15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. If needed, when you turn the fries, give them an extra brush of olive oil for a beautiful golden crust.
3. To make the creamy dipping sauce, add all the ingredients together and mix well. Taste and adjust the flavours if necessary. Add more lemon juice for a tart dip or more sweetness for a sweeter dip. Season with a pinch of sea salt.
4. Serve your tofu fries hot with the creamy dipping sauce and a wedge of lemon. Enjoy!
